Broadband tips for students

Sorting out broadband in a shared house is easier if you agree a few things before you sign up.

Agree who's paying, and how

One person has to be the account holder. They sign the contract, pass the credit check and are responsible if the bill isn't paid. Agree how you'll split the cost before anyone signs. Use the "People sharing the bill" option on the comparison table to see what each person would pay.

Check what your tenancy includes

Some student lets include broadband in the rent. Ask your landlord or letting agent before you order, so you don't end up paying twice. If you need a new line or a full fibre installation, you may need the landlord's permission first.

Order before you move in

New connections can take a few weeks. If you know your address, order early and choose a start date for when you arrive. Some providers let you pick an installation date.

Think about speed

  • Up to 4 people who mostly stream, browse and join video lectures: around 50 to 100Mbps is usually plenty.
  • 5 or more people, or anyone who games or uploads large files: look at 150Mbps or faster, and check the upload speed.
  • Wifi matters as much as speed. In a big house, put the router somewhere central, not in a cupboard.

Cancel at the right time

Rolling deals carry on until you cancel, and most providers need 30 days' notice. Cancel about a month before you move out. Get written confirmation, such as an email or a chat transcript.

Send the equipment back

Many providers charge if you don't return the router. Check how to return it when you cancel, and get proof of postage.

If something goes wrong

Complain to the provider first, in writing. If it isn't sorted out within six weeks, you can take your complaint to a free ombudsman scheme: the Communications Ombudsman or CISAS. Your provider will tell you which one it uses.
